FAQ

1) Do I have to record my video in Flipgrid and why Flipgrid?

  • While you do not NEED to use Flipgrid (on either phone, via the app, or on your laptop) to RECORD your video, it is the easiest way to get your video up. YOU WILL HAVE TO UPLOAD IT TO THE FLIPGRID SITE  (www.flipgrid.com/7bad90).  Also, you can upload a video that you have made (lets say) on your phone, but we really want them to stay to the 90 second time limit. By using Flipgrid, the program imposes that limit, whereas an uploaded video can often run longer than that.  We chose Flipgrid because it is so easy to make a video of the desired length and share it to the website.  Also because you can make videos on your phone and on your laptop we thought that this provided maximum flexibility.

2) If I have a video about similar topics can I just upload that video?

  • If you have a video already made that covers similar topics, we will accept those (we want to be as inclusive as possible), but often times those videos are more well produced and/or go beyond the 90 second time line.  SO, if the only way you can take part in the project is via a video that you have made for another project, we will take it, but we prefer that you use Flipgrid so that the videos are similar in style and length.

3) Who can see these videos?

  • Once uploaded the videos are visible to anyone with the link (www.flipgrid.com/7bad90) or anyone who enters "1000STEMWomen" as the "grid code" on Flipgrid.com.  So please make sure that anything you put in the videos you are comfortable with (potentially) the whole world seeing.

4) How professional do these videos need to look?

  • We want the videos to be really quick and easy for any scientist to make! Also, students are comfortable with videos that are taken on cell phones or via webcam, so we do NOT need these videos to be a large scale production.  Just you quickly and clearly telling the students who you are, what type of science you do, and what is left to discover in your field.  What we really want is that the students see all the different types of female scientists and the passion that you have for the science you do!

5) Will any videos be excluded?

  • We want the 1000 STEM Women Project to be as inclusive as possible, and a safe place where students can see STEM Female role models that they can emulate in the future. Keep it clean, any video that is deemed offensive, derogatory, or demeaning will immediately be removed from the project.
