During Spring 2017 I worked with a 6th grade science classroom in Rhode Island via Flipgrid.  I would pose a weekly question and they would respond with video responses to the prompt.  These prompts were largely focused on ecology.  For example, I asked the students to try to determine how many different types of species   an ecosystem  needs to be "healthy".

The last prompt that I sent asked what other types of scientists they would be interested in meeting/learning about.  While the students were very excited to meet/learn about other types of scientists via Flipgrid, I was struck by the lack of diversity in their answers.  They said Chemist, Marine Biologist, Astrophysicist, and Meteorologist.

While this was good, it was not great.

In their responses, I saw an opportunity for K-12 students to learn how many different types of scientists there were beyond these large categories.

I started the 1000 STEM Women Project.

Using Flipgrid, the 1000 STEM Women Project hopes to curate a video library where female scientists can record 90 second descriptions of what type of scientist they are  and what they work on.

​

These videos will be permanently available for ANY K-12 (or college) classroom to utilize as a resource for their students to learn about the various types of science disciplines out there.  Additionally it provides an easily accessible resource for students to see some AMAZING female STEM role models.
